Basics of Research in Emergency Medicine Workshop
This course is designed to provide a very brief, but relatively comprehensive introduction to the science of performing clinical research. This workshop is derived from a 12 day more comprehensive basic research skills course. It is not possible to go into each topic in detail, but includes a broad array of research topics. It covers all the basic concepts and some practical application. It provides sample formats for developing research ideas, questions and study protocols. It covers research questions, hypotheses, study designs, study protocol elements, data elements, hypothesis testing and writing abstracts and manuscripts. It is designed for novice researchers or inexperienced faculty interested in increasing their research knowledge level. It uses clinical EM examples whenever possible, illustrate points.
At the end of this session, the attendee will:
- Have an increased understanding of the science of clinical research.
- Be able to develop a properly formatted research question and refine it.
- Explain the relationship between research questions and hypotheses.
- Be able to list and describe the most common research designs.
- Be able to draft a proposed study protocol.
- Understand the basic principles of data analysis.
- Know the format and structure of scientific manuscripts.
